The Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties “Learning Community” was created to assist school districts in creating new opportunities for students and families. As one of the programs of the Learning Community, Parent University has the same vision as the Learning Community.

That all children within the Learning Community achieve academic success without regard to social or economic circumstance. When families are stable they are more able to engage in their children’s learning and partner with their child’s school. Parent University will show you the way!

WHAT IS PARENT UNIVERSITY (PU)?

Parent University, a comprehensive family engagement program of the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties based out of the Learning Community Center of North Omaha is comprised of individual family and center-based learning. Center-based learning was developed around four major areas: Parenting, Life Skills & Wellness, School Success, and Leadership. Under each major area, there are a variety of different courses parents can enroll in and learn from.

WHO CAN JOIN?

Parents or Caregivers who are parenting children age 6 or younger and live in the following school attendance areas:

DOES IT COST?

Parent University requires parents’ time but does not cost them any money.

IF I JOIN, HOW CAN PARENT UNIVERSITY BENEFIT ME AND MY FAMILY?

Parent University is a program based out of the Learning Community Center of North Omaha (LCCNO). LCCNO has an onsite library where families can obtain a library card and check out toy kits and books. Parent University members also have access to free computers and printing services. Each member is assigned their own personal Educational Navigator who will meet with members monthly to ensure families are supported and connected to any needed resources.

HOW LONG HAS THE PROGRAM BEEN IN EXISTENCE?

Parent University began February 2015.

WHY IS THIS PROGRAM NOT OFFERED TO EVERYONE?

The Learning Community Center of North Omaha is a community center of the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties within Achievement Sub-council 2; therefore Parent University can only be offered within those boundaries. To ensure the program is helpful it was decided to take a targeted approach with started in specific areas prior to growing the program through the entire Achievement Sub-council 2 boundaries.

HOW DO I JOIN?

Call 402.505.4301 to schedule an appointment to join Parent University. First appointments take about 30 minutes.

AFTER I JOIN WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME?

Members are expected to attend parent-teacher conferences for their school-aged children, have monthly contact with their child’s teacher and their assigned Educational Navigator, and successfully completed a minimum of two Parent University courses each year they are in the program.

IF I AM EXPECTED TO COME TO COURSES IS CHILDCARE AND TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE?

Yes, childcare is provided onsite for members while they are in courses and transportation is available if needed.

HOW LONG ARE PARENT UNIVERSITY COURSES?

The shortest course is three weeks and the longest course offered is twelve weeks. Parent University does offer one-day workshops and forums, but they do not count towards the two-course minimum requirement. Members are encouraged to take courses based on their need. Also, the longer course usually includes incentives like gift cards.
